Malaysia’s Sivasangari Subramaniam and New Zealand’s Paul Coll emerged victorious at the GillenMarkets London Squash Classic, with Sivasangari upsetting World No.2, Hania El Hammamy, while Coll secured his win against Mostafa Asal yesterday at Alexandra Palace.
What are Levels?
SquashLevels uses a bespoke algorithm to assess each player’s current playing level based on their results and their opponents.
It focuses on how well they are playing rather than how many rounds they have progressed through. The ratings are updated match-by-match and they give great insight into how ‘in-form’ the players are right now.
Top Three Women Improvers across the GillenMarkets London Squash Classic
In 2020 PSA and SquashLevels revealed the launch of the ‘PSA Power Ratings’ which will provide an accurate, up-to-date indication of a pro player’s current form.
This is often an indication of how players will move across the World Rankings, often highlighting up-and-coming players.
Sivasangari Subramaniam
Subramaniam completed a dream week, taking down top seeds Nour El Sherbini and Hania El Hammamy, to lift the PSA World Tour Gold-level title. As a result she has catapulted into the PSA Power Ratings top ten at #10, from #15 before the tournament, as well as increasing her level by an incredible 12.53% to 13,828.
Tesni Murphy
Wales No. 1 Tesni Murphy made it to the second round, losing out on a spot in the quarter-finals to World No.1 El Sherbini, increasing her level by an impressive 4.43% from 10,484 to 10,948.
Alicia Mead
Mead lost out on a place in the quarter-finals to fellow Englishwoman Sarah-Jane Perry, but saw her level increase by 3.05% to 8,152. Prior to the tournament Mead was sat at #66 in the PSA Power Ratings, shooting up to #55 by the end of the tournament.
Top Three Men Improvers across the GillenMarkets London Squash Classic
Declan James
Wildcard Declan James enjoyed a spectacular run at the London Squash Classic, beating Egyptian former World No.1 and 2016 World Champion Karim Abdel Gawad to reach the semi-finals of a PSA World Tour Gold-level event for the first time in his career, before Egypt’s Mostafa Asal ended hopes of a home winner.
His level increased an impressive 14.01% from 37,315 to 42,542, while his PSA Power Rating jumped up 14 places to #34.
George Parker
Parker lost out on a semi-final place to eventual winner Paul Coll, but still managed to increase his level a massive 11.06% to 41,192, while rising up 12 places in the PSA Power Ratings to #37.
Aly Abou Eleinen
Starting the tournament within the top 20 at #19, Eleinen solidified his position increasing his level 4.61% to 51,083 while sliding up the PSA Power Ratings to #17.
What is SquashLevels?
SquashLevels is a results-based ranking system. As players compete in their leagues and tournaments, their results automatically flow into SquashLevels from their results providers. From here, SquashLevels’ unique algorithm will calculate a Level for each player based on their opponents’ Level, their result including points scores, behavioural modelling and various other factors. SquashLevels rewards a player for performing better than they were expected to based on their Level.
